What is Nasdaq?
Nasdaq refers both to a major U.S. stock exchange and to the indexes tied to it, most famously the Nasdaq Composite and the Nasdaq 100. These indexes are heavily weighted toward technology companies, so they often move differently from broader measures of the market. When people say the Nasdaq is up or down, they usually mean one of those indexes.
Why Nasdaq matters
Its tech-heavy makeup means it can behave very differently from the broad market in the same week.
