What is Index?
An index is a way to measure the performance of a group of stocks or other assets with a single number. Instead of tracking one company, an index tracks a basket, such as the largest companies in a country, and shows how that whole group is moving. An index itself is just a measurement, but you can invest in funds that aim to follow one.
Why Index matters
Indexes are how people gauge whether the broad market is up or down, and they back many beginner-friendly funds.
