What is Fat Tails?

Fat tails describe a distribution where extreme results happen far more often than a normal bell curve predicts. Market returns are fat-tailed: very large daily falls and rises occur much more often than their standard deviation would suggest under a normal curve.

Why Fat Tails matters

Positions sized for a bell curve can be wiped out by moves that markets deliver far more often than expected.
