What is Standard Deviation?
Standard deviation measures how far values typically sit from their average. For a sample, square each value's distance from the mean, add the squares, divide by the count minus one, and take the square root. Applied to returns, it is the usual measure of volatility.
Why Standard Deviation matters
It turns how bumpy an investment has been into one number that can be compared and scaled.
