What is Real return?

A real return is the growth of an investment after inflation, so it measures the change in what your money can buy. Exactly, it is (1 + nominal return) divided by (1 + inflation), minus 1; subtracting inflation from the nominal return is a close shortcut when both are small.

Why Real return matters

It is the return that tells you whether you are actually better off.
