What is Correlation?
Correlation measures how consistently two sets of numbers move together in a straight-line way. The correlation coefficient runs from -1, always moving in opposite directions, through 0, no linear relationship, to +1, always moving together. A high correlation does not show that one causes the other.
Why Correlation matters
Diversification only reduces risk when holdings have a correlation below 1, and correlations can rise in sell-offs.
