What is Spousal RRSP?
A spousal or common-law partner RRSP is an RRSP owned by one partner that the other partner contributes to. The contributor claims the deduction and it uses the contributor's own deduction limit. If the owner withdraws soon after a contribution, the withdrawal can be taxed back to the contributor.
Why Spousal RRSP matters
It can move future retirement income toward the partner expected to have the lower tax rate, subject to the withdrawal timing rule.
