The Sortino ratio is a cousin of the Sharpe ratio that only counts downside volatility as risk. The idea is that big upside moves are not really a problem, so only harmful swings should be penalized. A higher Sortino suggests stronger returns for the amount of downside pain involved.
It focuses risk measurement on the losses that actually hurt, not on the upside.
