What is Risk tolerance?

Risk tolerance is how much loss and how many ups and downs a person is able and willing to sit through in exchange for a chance at higher returns. It has an emotional side, how a fall feels, and a practical side, whether you can afford to wait for a recovery. The two do not always match.

Why Risk tolerance matters

A mix that is more aggressive than your real tolerance tends to get abandoned at exactly the wrong moment.
