What is Interest rate risk?
Interest rate risk is the chance that a bond loses value because market interest rates rise. New bonds then pay more, so an older bond with a lower fixed coupon has to sell at a lower price to compete. The longer a bond has left until maturity, the bigger this effect usually is.
Why Interest rate risk matters
Even a bond with almost no chance of default can fall in price, which surprises many first-time bond investors.
